What is Botox?

Botox® is a prescription medicine containing botulinum toxin type A.

It works by temporarily reducing the activity of selected muscles. This can soften lines caused by repeated facial movements such as frowning, smiling and raising the eyebrows.

The effects are temporary and gradually wear off as muscle activity returns.

Botox® is a specific brand. Other botulinum toxin products are available, but their doses and units are not directly interchangeable.
